My Approach

Psychological Problems Are Common

My experience of working in the NHS for over 25 years has shaped how I approach mental health difficulties in my own practice. Psychological problems are common and may affect any one of us at any point in our lives. Some are short-lived and respond well to brief, focussed interventions; others are more deep seated and are likely to respond better to longer term psychotherapy. I work in both short term and open ended way and in all of my work I strive for realistic and meaningful change.

No two people are the same

My approach focuses on listening to your experience and identifying those unconscious patterns that may be preventing you from living a full and creative life.  True sense of authenticity is impossible without self awareness and my role is to help you facilitate your own process of self-discovery, so that you can continue your life journey in a way that is uniquely yours.

Curiosity

I hope to encourage your curiosity about your inner world .We will work together in a mutual effort to make sense of your experience and to think differently about your past, present and future. I do not tell you what to do or giver advice but offer observations and feedback about the long-standing assumptions you may have or ways in which you might be stuck. By understanding your own story and exploring the ways in which you limit yourself, you can change the way you see yourself and the world.

Our Past Exerts A Powerful Effect On The Present

As a psychodynamic practitioner I believe unless we understand how the past continues to exert an effect on the present we cannot identify what needs to change now. This means that I am interested in listening to you and trying to help you understand how past experiences, often from childhood, affect your life today and the way you view yourself. Together we explore different  ways you can think about your past, present and future.

Change and Transition

My training and work experience across different cultures has given me special understanding and insights into issues of managing change and cultural complexity.I have considerable experience of working in highly pressurised environments and  I have a special interest in  helping individuals going through transitions in their  personal and  professional  lives.

Open Mind

My experience has taught me to approach every new therapeutic encounter with an open mind rather than “One-Size-Fits-All” attitude. Psychoanalytic approach is not for everybody and it is unhelpful to commit to any therapy without giving some time and consideration to this important decision. Our work therefore would always begin with an initial consultation to determine the nature of the difficulties, the most appropriate intervention and whether I would be the right person to help you with your issues. The experience of the consultation should give you an idea of how I work, what would be expected of you and what you can expect of me. If I am not the right person I will try to connect you with someone else who can help you.

Trust

For psychotherapy to be effective, trust must be part of the therapeutic process, and all information disclosed by you is treated as confidential, whether in person, on the phone or by email. It is vitally important to feel safe and secure in the relationship with your therapist and I place this at the heart of our work.
